Bear sightings in back yards are becoming more frequent over the last few years. Bears beautiful animals but should be viewed at a distance. Bears are extremely strong animals and can damage property and cause serious injury to people and pets. There are precautions that you can take to reduce visits by bears. Take down your bird feeders! We recommend this for all wildlife management. We commonly come into contact with homeowners that completely disregard this advise and yet their property is overrun by pest and wildlife issues. Bears love bird feeders! Keep your trash and dumpsters secured and tidy. Do not leave pet or human food out!

If you come into close contact with a bear raise your arms up and try to appear big while yelling loudly; then back away slowly. Do not run! Never approach cubs or attempt to rescue them. Call the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) at 860-424-3011. Do not attempt to shoot a bear since it is illegal to do except in extreme life-threatening cases.
